Why Go To Church?
A church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday.
“I’ve gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs, by giving sermons at all.”
This started a real controversy in the Letter to the Editor column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until this came out in the column clinching the controversy:
“I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time, my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this . . . They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”
Church should never be considered a waste of time or breath! If we want spiritual growth, then we need the nourishment of God’s word! You may not remember every sermon your pastor will preach, but each one opens the Good Book a little farther, giving you a little more wisdom to walk in your daily walk, and strengthening your whole body of armor.
2 Peter 3:17-18 – Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
The Challenge: This week, pray before you ready yourself for church. Pray for an open mind for the sermon. Pray for remembrance of the sermon that you will apply it to your life. Pray for your pastor to speak God’s words and not his own. Pray with your whole heart, seeking God for spiritual growth in His house.
