James 2:8-13 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
In this passage of scripture , James tells us why it is wrong to practice the sin of partiality. As I was reading this passage I could almost see the events going on. What you see here is a group of people who say, “Yes we love our neighbors as ourselves,” but the problem is they only love the “lovable”. They discriminated against races and against wealth. I must ask is that love? James tells them though, “If you really love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing great, but you guys aren’t. You are showing partiality and therefore are committing sin!”
Then he makes a statement that amazed me! He said, “For if you fail in one point of the Law, you have become accountable to all of the Law.” Do you understand what that means? That means that all sin is equal in the eyes of our God! Whether you tell the smallest lie or kill thousands of people, in the eyes of God both are equal! So my friend, and here’s the hurtful part even in my own life, if you think that your walk with God is good right now and that you are doing good and standing firm, but you are showing partiality against people, then you are a sinner in need of repentance.
I’ve had to search my heart about this as well, and I know that God is working in me to change my heart in the area of partiality towards people. That’s the good thing. You can be dealing with this sin right now, maybe even unrecognized, but God is willing to forgive you and help you to change your heart! Christians be watchful of the sin of partiality. God shows no favorites!!
