John 16:33 (Amplified Bible) I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer! For I have overcome the world.
In the book of James it tells us we are to be happy when trials come our way. However, we also know that sometimes those trials we face are very difficult and stressful. So how are we supposed to be happy or full of joy? Let’s look at what Jesus had to say. To put this verse in the context of this chapter, Jesus had just finished speaking about the coming of the Holy Spirit, then He once again comforts his disciples after telling them He will be leaving the Earth. That’s where this verse fits right in.
Notice that the translation I used today stated that the peace and confidence that Christ provides is perfect. I liked that. Jesus says, “Even though I’m about to leave this Earth, I am sending you the Holy Spirit. You will not be alone. In me you will have perfect peace and confidence.” Now if that isn’t a reason to remain in Him, I don’t know what is!
Check it out though, it gets better! Jesus continues, “In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer! For I have overcome the world.” Here Jesus is speaking of the trials we face that James spoke about, and what Jesus tells us is the answer to our original question. “Be of good cheer! For I have overcome the world.” Jesus loudly proclaims in those two sentences, “Be happy and joyful! For I have deprived the world of its power to harm you and have conquered it for you!!”
So now the perfect peace and confidence makes sense. How could we not have perfect peace and confidence knowing that our Savior Jesus Christ, even though we face various trials if need be, has already deprived the world of its power to harm us? The answer is obvious. Knowing that, we SHOULD have perfect peace and confidence which would lead us to be happy and to rejoice!
Praise GOD, Jesus has overcome!
